These are perhaps the worst times for the economy since the Great Depression of 1929. With many stressors looming large, coping with the down turn may be causing many people to abuse prescription drugs.

A major effect of recession is that of unemployment and as per the latest statistics by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, both the number of unemployed persons (10.3 million) and the unemployment rate (6.7 percent) has continued to increase in November. You are drinking “Recycled Drugs”! How devastating is that sound?

An expert on antibiotic resistance at the University of Illinois. Christian Daughton, a Chief of Environmental Chemistry for the EPA warns, “Water pollution by drugs is a newly emerging issue.”

A vast array of pharmaceuticals – including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones – have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows.

Indeed, I am not sure if you’ve been following the news, and the pharmaceutical industry but The Food and Drug Administration has levied several fines, and given many warnings to drug makers for poor quality in manufacturing. This should raise red flags for everyone, especially considering that the US taxpayer is paying for all these drugs for people on Medicare and Medicaid plans. In 2009 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) increased the number of warning letters it sent to drug manufacturers concerning their advertising practices. The number of warnings given out was double what it had been in 2008. The main complaint that the FDA has in the majority of its warning letters is misleading claims and over-stated benefits of some drugs which simply are not true. Three manufacturers have been sent warning letters over their promotional content in the past month. Sanofi Aventis, Eli Lilly and Meda have all been asked to remove or change their promotional material for different drugs that they make.
